I have a question for everyone. I'm am working on the design for a planted tank. It will be a 75 and heavily planted. I want to move my herd of cherry shrimp there to help with the de-algaeing (new word?) chores. What would you suggest for tank mates? I'm thinking schools of maybe, harli-rasbora, cardinals/neons, or other smallish tetra/danios. Are there suggestions for larger fish that won't hunt down the shrimp?
I'd like to avoid single fish, since I think they're happier when they have company of their own kind. And I'm thinking something else besides angels. My current planted 55 has a magnificent pair of platinum angels (no shrimp) and I want something different in the new tank.
Any thoughts?

How about hatchetfish for the top of the tank ? They would "probably" leave shrimps alone down below for the most part.
Micro-rasboras are great - most will leave adult shrimp alone and only eat some of the babies. Ditto celestial pearl rasboras or scarlet badis
Harlies will eventually get big enough to snack some adults IMO

Bristlenose plecos are usually a save bet.


I've actually got swordtails and cherry shrimp breeding in the same tank, but its got a nice 3" deep layer of java moss across the whole bottom of the tank ...
And I'm not exactly getting thousands of cherry shrimp out of that tank, now that I think about it

Celestial pearls are one of the 'small fish schools' I had in mind. I also will be moving those little danios I bought from you, in fact I'd like to get more when the big tank is up. I love the idea of hatchets too.
But what of any larger fish? Discus? Severum? I know that I had a mess of shrimp survive for years with some rather large angels, but I didn't see much of them until I tore down the tank. I'd like them to be a little more visible than that.

Well, if you want to see more of the shrimps, you cannot add any fish larger than a small danio size. The shrimps will view them as predators and hide, while the larger fish will view the shrimps as food, which of course they are. Stay with cories and ottos, and small fishes that wont get larger than 2 inches and you should be ok.
