I just picked up a used Tidepool sump. It is quite obvious that it was previously used on a salt water tank. What do I need to do to use it in fresh water? I know the bio-wheel needs mega-rinsing, but will it be OK to reuse in fresh water?
This will be perfect for my temperate water 125G that I'm working on.

Thanx!

I would just give a good scrub and rinse. If it has bioballs, give them a long soak. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry much. At worse, you'll be adding a little bit of salt to that 125g of FW - no biggie.

I agree with Biotoper. Give everything a good clean, and you should be good to go.

Pick up a gallon bottle of plain white vinegar and soak the parts in a strong vinegar/hot water solution.

Same stuff you use to wash the mineral deposits from a coffee maker.

Vinegar is a safe, non toxic way of removing mineral deposits from just about everything (except that I think it discolors some metal.. but the bits you're talking about are probably plastic..
