The Article Exchange
by Rick Kraft
From the April 1999
issue of The Daphnian

Some of the best publications put out by aquarium societies come out of Canada. I can't figure out why, but the publications are well organized and always have interesting content. This month we will review five publications from "The Great White North."

THE CALQUARIUM
The Official Publication of the Calgary Aquarium Society, June 1998.
This publication contains articles on Knifefish and Waterlilies. However, two articles stand out. "Shall We Dance," by Jennifer Wilkinson provides excellent information of the keeping and breeding of Melanochromis auratus. Which has a special place in my memory as it was the first African Cichlid that spawned for me. The second article I would like to mention specifically is "Killifish, For Dummies" by Birgit McKinnon. The article covers a number of different genus, Aphyosemion, Notho-branchius, Aplocheilus, Epiplatys and Cynolebias. It is a great overview of each genus.

THE CALQUARIUM
The Official Publication of the Calgary Aquarium Society, November 1995.
I specifically chose this issue because of an excellent article written by Birgit McKinnon titled "Corydoras Adolfoi." The article goes in depth on the author's experience with the catfish and her experience with some accidental hybrids. Also worth mentioning from this publication are two reprints. The first being taken from ALL CICHLIDS, the publication from the Michigan Cichlid Association. The article "Spawning the Green Furcifer" was written by Marty Ruthkosky. The second article was taken from our very own Daphnian. "A Native Wonder" was authored by Tom Neal. It discusses his experience with Heterandria formosa.

FINS & TALES
A publication of the Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society, January 1996.
This publication has a number of reprints dealing with fish such as the Aphyosemion australe and Xiphophorus pygmaeus, however they are not really the gems of this publication. There are two articles that were very well written and full of useful information. The first being authored by Al Ridley, titled "Pencilfish." This is an excellent one page article on the genus Nannostomus and Nannobrycon. The second article is "Rare Beauties from West Africa" written by Dave Unruh. It covers two species
of the genus Pelvicachromis, P. subocellatus and P. taeniatus. Both are really worth reading.

FINS & TALES
A publication of the Kitchener-Waterloo Aquarium Society, May 1998.
This publication has one original article, "Microworms, Whiteworms, and Brine Shrimp," authored by the president of the society, Al Ridley. It is an article that goes into detail on what is necessary to propagate these important live foods. A mention must also be made about a reprint from the Daphnian titled "Giving Live Plants a Chance," written by Karen Randall.

TANK TALK
From the Durham Region Aquarium Society, September 1998.
"DARTER AQUARIUMS, Habitat Designs and Care Guidelines" written by Ray Katula. Well written and in depth, Mr. Katula makes a case for devoting a tank to these natives. Also in this issue are a number of reprints. One being on wintering over water lilies and another from our very own Karen Randall on algae.

I will always close with the statement- if any members wish to read or make a copy of any specific articles that are mentioned in this column, please contact me and I will be happy to get you the issue.
